It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.Reunited on Record for the first time since 1984 - The 4 Original Members of Grammy Award winning A Flock Of Seagulls. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. But there is seemingly no way out but death. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"-being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. He then tries again and finds himself floating in a beam of light with the girl, which can be interpreted as a moment of pure happiness and connection with her. The last part of the song mentions the protagonist reaching out a hand to touch the girl's face, only to see her slowly disappearing from his view. He says that he ran all night and day, but couldn't get away, which may suggest that his feelings for the girl and the desire to be with her are so strong that he cannot escape them. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "And I ran, I ran so far away" which can be interpreted as the protagonist trying to escape from the reality and seeking a place where he and the girl can be together. This can be interpreted as the protagonist feeling drawn to the girl, and having a desire to be close to her. He then describes how a cloud appears above her head, a beam of light comes shining down on her, and the cloud begins to move nearer. The lyrics mention the protagonist walking along the avenue and encountering a girl who has a captivating effect on him. The song is about a person's feelings of love and desire, and how they are trying to escape from reality to be with the person they love.
